FIFA's "The Best" Awards Unexpected Results: Barcelona Players Support Messi and Women's Team Shines
Who cast votes for the Barcelona players in the FIFA "The Best" Awards, and from where? There were unexpected votes cast.
The leaders of numerous national teams disclosed their voting practices for the recent FIFA "The Best" Awards, with some unexpected outcomes. Players from FC Barcelona Sergio Busquets and Robert Lewandowski both awarded Lionel Messi, the night's huge winner, their #1 vote. Lewandowski, the lone Barcelona player nominated for the male award, earned votes from 23 players, coaches, and sportswriters and completed the game in 12th place with 7 points. Interestingly, Pepe, a former Real Madrid player, cast the votes rather than Cristiano Ronaldo, and he chose Mbappé, Modri, and Benzema as the winners.
Aitana Bonmat, Keira Walsh, and Alexia Putellas were
nominated for the award on the women's side, with Putellas taking home the
trophy a second time. Walsh came in 13th, while Bonmat took fifth. Sandra Paos
Garca-Villamil was also a finalist for the award for the best female goalkeeper,
placing fourth overall. Lucy Bronze, Putellas, Mara León, and Putellas all
reached the FIFA FIFPRO Women's World 11.
Despite the fact that no Barcelona players were included
in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11, several supporters were upset with David
Alaba's choice of Messi, Benzema, and Mbappé as the top three players. Alaba
said that he always liked his teammate Benzema and that the Austrian national
squad as a whole decided on his choice.
