In the middle of the global crisis, US Secretary of State Blinken Supports Modi's Demand for Multilateralism and Warns China of "Serious" Implications
Blinken agrees that there are "workarounds," but he backs Modi's position on multilateralism in crisis situations.
US Secretary of State Blinken warned reporters in Delhi on
Thursday that "serious" consequences will result if China aids Russia
militarily or evades Western-imposed sanctions.
In a strong speech delivered in Delhi on Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken backed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plea for multilateralism in the midst of the present world crises.
He did,
however, issue a "serious" warning to China, saying it would suffer
if it provided military support to Russia or disregarded Western sanctions.
Blinken stated in his media briefing that although the
multilateral system has legitimate difficulties, there are also solutions
available. We are as focused on interacting with and resolving issues that
concern people all around the world as we are on ensuring that Russia cannot
succeed in its aggression against Ukraine. He stated, "We're doing it
through the G20, the G7, and many other organizations.
Earlier that day, during the G20 Foreign Ministers'
Meeting, Modi had voiced his worries that global governance had failed to
promote international cooperation and avert conflicts. A common communiqué was
not produced as a consequence of the summit because Russia and China disagreed
with the passages that mentioned the conflict in Ukraine..
Blinken supported the multilateral system, however, by
pointing to the adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution that demanded the
rapid evacuation of the Russian military from Ukraine. In addition, he used India's
chair report and result paper from the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting as an
illustration of how to deal with past situations when one country stands out as an
exception.
As seen by the conclusion of the G20 Finance Ministers'
Meeting in Bangalore last week without a consensus statement, the lack of
agreement among member nations continues to be a problem. To implement action
on the promises established in the present G20 working group sessions, world
leaders and heads of state will still gather in Delhi for the G20 Summit in
September of this year.
Blinken's speech serves as a powerful reminder that,
despite the difficulties the multilateral system faces, there are still ways to
go beyond those difficulties and effect significant change. His admonition to
China also emphasizes the significance of abiding by international sanctions
and respecting other countries' sovereignty.
We can only hope that they will take the necessary actions
to develop greater international collaboration and promote peace around the
world. The G20 Summit in September will provide leaders the chance to come
together and confront these challenges head-on.
