Russian fighter plane takes down a US drone, raising tensions between the two countries
A risky and worrying event involving two Russian fighter planes and a US Air Force drone has caused tensions between the US and Russia to reach unprecedented heights.
On Tuesday, March 14th, a Russian Su-27
aircraft caused a US MQ-9 Reaper drone to come to a stop over the Black Sea,
causing it to fall into the water.
The Russian plane purposely passed in front of the drone before dumping gasoline on it, striking its propeller, and causing it to fall, according to the US military.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began a little
over a year ago, this occurrence represents the first direct physical contact
between Russian and US military aircraft.
Russian measures have caused American officials to express
considerable alarm, describing them as "unsafe, unprofessional, and
irresponsible." According to Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the
Pentagon, the Russian plane had been flying "in the neighborhood" of
the drone for more than 30 minutes before the incident.
When asked about the potentially dangerous nature of the
Russian actions, Air Force Gen. James B. Hecker, commander of US Air Forces
Europe and Air Forces Africa, said that they "nearly caused both aircraft
to crash." The US administration has also denounced Russia's actions as
being "environmentally unsound," as the drone crashed into the Black
Sea, and its retrieval is unlikely owing to the depth of the sea.
Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the US, was
called into the State Department to talk about the event. He said that Russia
has warned against a "zone for special military action" and does not
want to engage in conflict with the US. The US, though, has denied knowing
about such a zone and expressed alarm about the rising hostilities between the
two countries.
Concerns regarding the security of international airspace
and the requirement for productive communication between the two nations have
been raised in response to the occurrence. US authorities have held high-level
conversations regarding the event and briefed their friends and partners on it.
The Defense Department is presently attempting to declassify
incident images in an effort to clarify the circumstances. The department's
spokesperson, John Kirby, dismissed Russia's denial of guilt and cautioned
against believing their claims over the violence in Ukraine.
Concerns have been voiced regarding the incident's potential
effects on global relations as well as the current crisis in Ukraine. The
"lowest point" and "deplorable condition" of ties between
Russia and the US, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, have been
described.
The potentially destructive nature of the Russian activities
and the consequent hostilities between the two nations underline the necessity
for a productive conversation and a dedication to preventing accidents in
international airspace. Such actions have been condemned by the US
administration, and it is crucial that both nations seek to settle their
problems amicably.
