Russia launches deadly attacks on Ukraine, drawing condemnation and sanctions from across the world
Russia has unleashed a series of devastating strikes on
Ukrainian towns and cities, leading to several fatalities and injuries in a
frightening escalation of the continuing confrontation between Russia and
Ukraine. The assaults, which started on Wednesday, targeted both military sites
and civilian targets with drones and missiles developed in Iran called Shahid.
After unsuccessful meetings with Russian President
Vladimir Putin about Ukraine, Chinese leader Xi Jinping left Moscow at the same
time as the attacks. Russia's military unleashed a volley of attacks on the
Kyiv area of Ukraine as Xi was flying back to China, killing at least nine
people and wounding seven more.
Russian missiles struck apartment buildings in the city of
Zaporizhzhia in the region's southeast, killing at least one person and wounding
34 others, including two children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
referred to the strikes as "bestial brutality," while Ukrainian
officials labeled them a "deliberate attack" on people.
The strikes were denounced by the Biden administration,
and the Ukrainian air force claimed to have shot down 16 of the 21 drones that
had been sent against their country from the north. Wednesday night's
extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council was conducted to consider the
rising level of violence in Ukraine. Council members denounced Russian attacks
on Ukrainian civilians and demanded an immediate end to hostilities.
Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian ambassador to the UN, denied
any involvement in the assaults and accused Ukraine of inflaming the situation,
while the European Union responded to the most recent bloodshed in Ukraine by
announcing further sanctions against Russia. Sanctions against those implicated
in the assaults include asset freezes and travel restrictions.

The international community has urged Russia to respect
Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity by removing its soldiers and
weapons from the country. In the meanwhile, Ukraine has pledged to respond to
all Russian strikes militarily, politically, and legally. The world is watching
and waiting for any indication that this tragic war will be resolved while the
situation remains tight.
