The Israeli parliament just enacted a new rule that would make it much more difficult to remove a sitting prime minister from office, a decision that has aroused debate and fury. The measure, according to critics, is an effort by the government to protect Prime Leader Benjamin Netanyahu from his ongoing corruption trial, in which he is accused of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery.

The measure, which was enacted on Thursday, virtually prevents any attempts to remove Netanyahu from office by requiring a supermajority in parliament and a two-thirds majority in the cabinet to declare a prime minister ineligible. Former Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the new legislation a "disgraceful and corrupt personalized bill" and charged Netanyahu with "looking out just for himself" in the opposition's criticism of the measure.

Merav Michaeli, an MK for the Labor Party, blasted the measure as "shameful" and "disgraceful," claiming that its purpose is to keep Netanyahu out of jail. This occurs at a time when the Israeli Supreme Court is debating a petition to deem Netanyahu unsuitable for office due to his purported breach of a conflict of interest statement.

The contentious law's passage has fueled continued demonstrations against the government's efforts to reform the nation's judicial system, which many feel would weaken judicial supervision and the Supreme Court. Israelis have been demonstrating against these reforms in the streets in large numbers for months, with prominent personalities from the security, high-tech, financial, and intellectual sectors participating.

These protests have only become more intense since the new law was passed; according to some estimates, hundreds of thousands of people have taken part in the demonstrations. Many Israelis are worried about the new law's effects on democracy and the rule of law in their nation. Detractors claim that the government is clearly trying to weaken the courts and protect Netanyahu.

In an effort to get the bill struck down, the opposition has vowed to appeal it to the Supreme Court. Yet, given Israel's present political context, several legal experts have hypothesized that the court could be hesitant to do so.

International human rights organizations have also opposed the law's passage, with some claiming that Israel's government is intending to undermine the nation's democratic institutions. The closest ally of Israel, the United States, has not yet made a statement.

Several analysts have expressed concern that Israel is experiencing a worsening democratic crisis as tensions in the nation continue to grow. The continued protests, the political unrest brought on by Netanyahu's corruption prosecution, and the government's efforts to reform the judicial system have all led to severe fears about the survival of Israeli democracy.

Tensions between Netanyahu's administration and the opposition have risen sharply as a result of the law's passage, with many accusing the prime minister of trying to thwart the democratic process. The measure, according to a number of well-known opponents, might create a risky precedent and pave the road for authoritarianism in Israel.

In response, Netanyahu has defended the measure as necessary to shield the prime minister from attempts to oust him from office for political reasons. He has charged the opposition with spreading false information about him and attempting to thwart the will of the people.

The continuing coronavirus epidemic, which has notably affected Israel, adds to the complexity of the problem. The administration has come under fire for how it has handled the situation, with many accusing Netanyahu of prioritizing his personal interests over the health and welfare of the nation.

The bill's passage has only increased Israel's sense of unease and unease, with many people doubting the government's devotion to democracy and the rule of law. The future of Israeli democracy and the position of the nation in the world is likely to be decided in the next weeks and months.
