Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane in the Heavyweight Championship Match at UFC 285
As No. 1 heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane and former UFC
light heavyweight champion Jon Jones squared up for the vacant undisputed
heavyweight championship, Las Vegas witnessed one of the biggest bouts in UFC
history. On Saturday, March 4, 2023, the fight took place in the T-Mobile
Arena, with the main card airing on ESPN+ PPV at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT.
Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko fought No. 6 rated
flyweight contender Alexa Grasso in the co-main event. Fans eagerly anticipated
the event and could not wait to watch how these battles turned out.
The preparatory fights before the main event established
the mood for what would follow. At 5:30 pm ET/2:30 pm PT, the lightweight fight
between Esteban Ribovics and Loik Radzhabov began the early prelims. In a
fierce struggle, unbeaten Ribovics (11-0, fighting out of Cordoba, Argentina)
and Radzhabov (16-4-1, competing out of Dushanbe, Tajikistan) squared off.
Ribovics won in a three-round decision by a unanimous vote.
Another lightweight contest pitted Da'Mon Blackshear
(12-4-1, fighting out of Albuquerque, New Mexico) against unbeaten Farid
Basharat (9-0, competing out of Las Vegas, Nevada), a former contestant in Dana
White's Contender Series. Both boxers put on a show during the exciting
contest, but Basharat was declared the winner by unanimous decision.
Jessica Penne (14-7, competing out of Huntington Beach,
California) took against Tabatha Ricci in a strawweight bout (7-1, fighting out
of Sao Paulo, Brazil). While it was a close battle, Penne was declared the
victor by a split decision.
In a bantamweight match, Mana Martinez (10-3, competing out
of Houston, Texas) faced Cameron Saaiman (7-0, fighting out of Pretoria,
Gauteng, South Africa). Martinez outclassed his opponent, winning the unanimous
decision after a commanding performance.
The last bout of the early prelims was a welterweight
match between Ian Machado Garry (10-0, fighting out of Deerfield Beach, FL,
through Dublin, Ireland) and Song Kenan (18-6, competing out of Beijing,
China). Garry was declared the winner by a unanimous vote after three rounds of
bloody combat.
At 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, the prelims kicked off with a
middleweight battle between Marc-Andre Barriault (14-6, 1 NC), fighting out of
Quebec, Canada, and Julian Marquez (9-3, competing out of Las Vegas, Nev. After
receiving a knockout blow in the second round, Marquez prevailed.
Viviane Araujo, the No. 7 rated flyweight in the world
(11-4, competing out of Brasilia, Brazil), faced No. 15 Amanda Ribas in an
attempt to maintain her position (11-3, fighting out of Varginha, Brazil).
While the bout was closely contested, Araujo won by a split decision.
In their bout, No. 10 Dricus Du Plessis (18-2, fighting
out of Pretoria, South Africa) and No. 5 rated middleweight Derek Brunson
(23-8, fighting out of Wilmington, N.C.) tried to slow down one other's momentum.
