The WHO Requests for Transparency Amid US-China Tensions, the Causes of COVID-19
WHO Following US's China Lab Claim: All Covid Origin Theories Stay On The Table
After American allegations of a Chinese lab leak and
vehement denials from Beijing, the WHO on Friday requested other nations to
share what they know about the origins of Covid-19.
WHO Following US's China Lab Claim: All Covid Origin Theories Stay On The Table
The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested openness from all nations over the provenance of Covid-19 amid escalating tensions between the US and China. This follows Christopher Wray, director of the FBI, saying that the malware probably came from a Wuhan lab mishap. The WHO is pushing nations to share whatever information they may have to increase scientific knowledge of the causes of the epidemic, even though Chinese officials have refuted the accusations.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the
WHO, underlined the significance of information sharing not to place blame but
rather to avoid, get ready for, and respond to potential pandemics. In order to
look into the pandemic's roots, the Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of
New Pathogens (SAGO) of the UN health agency was established in 2021.
Any theories regarding the virus's origins are still up for
discussion until China complies with the WHO's request for transparency in data
sharing and completing appropriate investigations. The WHO has contacted the US
delegation in Geneva for additional information, according to Maria Van
Kerkhove, the Covid-19 technical lead for the agency. The WHO, however, believes
that access to the data that formed the basis of the US reports is essential
for the advancement of scientific research.
Tedros cautioned that the politics of origins research is
making the scientific process more difficult and, as a result, making the world
less secure. With the millions of lives lost and the people who are still
suffering from long-term COVID, there is a moral need to discover how the
epidemic began.
Understanding the origins of the virus is essential to
preventing future pandemics as the globe struggles with new Covid-19 strains.
The WHO advises all nations to emphasize openness and provide any pertinent
information they may have even as tensions between the US and China continue to
increase.
