Rahul Gandhi Contests the Defamation Case Verdict; BJP Charges Him with Drama
Congress Leader Appearing in Surat Court for Appeal, Seeking Temporary Stay of Sentence for Insult to Prime Minister Modi
Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, appeared in court
in Surat on Saturday to contest his conviction and two-year sentence in a
defamation case from 2019. Purnesh Modi, a BJP Legislator and former minister
from Gujarat brought the lawsuit against him after he made a comment that was
perceived as derogatory about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi filed a
motion in Surat's sessions court seeking to overturn the Magistrate's judgment
finding him guilty of defamation and asking for a temporary stay of the
conviction. On April 13, the court will hear the plea.
Mr. Gandhi traveled to Surat with his sister Priyanka
after recently losing his eligibility to serve as a parliament member due to
his imprisonment in the case. Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, and Sukhvinder
Singh Sukhu, the chief ministers of three states governed by the Congress, are
also in Surat to provide Mr. Gandhi with "moral support." Gandhi had
a meeting with his mother Sonia before going to court.
Gandhi has been charged by the BJP with making a
"childish attempt" to influence the judges by traveling to Surat
with some party leaders and his sister. According to a tweet from law minister
Kiren Rijiju, Rahul Gandhi's trip to Surat was not necessary because, as usual,
no prisoner personally travels to submit an appeal. The action, according to
Rijiju, was "just a drama" and a "childish attempt to put
pressure on the appellate court."
On the other side, the Congress said that party leaders'
attendance in Surat is not a "display of strength" but rather a
"sign of support" for Rahul Gandhi. The party has further said that
the BJP-led administration in Gujarat has made "illegal arrests" to stop Congress officials and supporters from traveling to Surat.
Rahul Gandhi was found guilty by a jury and given a
two-year prison term last month for remarks he made in 2019 linking PM Modi's
last name to those of two wanted businessmen, noting how the
"thieves" had the same last name. Nonetheless, the judge gave him a
30-day bail period so he could challenge the judgment.
With his departure from office, Mr. Gandhi's Wayanad seat
in Kerala is now empty, and the Election Commission may immediately declare a
special election to fill it. A splintered opposition has united in response to
Rahul Gandhi's disqualification to criticize the BJP for allegedly misusing
federal investigative agencies against rival party members.
Asserting that Mr. Gandhi insulted the Other Backward
Class (OBC) group, a significant source of support for the BJP, party president
JP Nadda has claimed that the conviction was the result of an impartial court.
A significant turning point, in this case, will occur on
April 13 when the court rules on Mr. Gandhi's request. The Congress leaders
have resolved to stand behind Mr. Gandhi and demonstrate their support till
that time.
Since its start, the case against Rahul Gandhi has been
incredibly divisive and loaded with political overtones. He has been charged by
the BJP of disrespecting not just the Prime Minister but a whole community.
On the other side, Congress has referred to it as a
political vengeance and charged the BJP with exploiting the judiciary to muzzle
critics.
The fact that three Congress chief ministers are in Surat
today demonstrates the extent of Rahul Gandhi's popularity inside his party.
The BJP, on the other hand, derided it as a "display of power" and branded
it a "childish attempt" to exert pressure on the court.
On April 13, the fate of Rahul Gandhi's appeal is still

setback for the BJP if his conviction is overturned.
