Putin China plan could end war, but Ukraine and the West are not ready for peace

In a common news conference held after addresses with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that China's peace plan for Ukraine could be used as a base to end the war. still, Mr Putin added that the plan could be put forward only when they're ready" in the West and Kyiv".

The meeting between the two leaders was held in Moscow to bandy the conflict in Ukraine, and relations between the two countries. China's peace plan, which was published last month, doesn't explicitly call for Russia to leave Ukraine. Listing 12 points, it calls for peace addresses and respect for public sovereignty, without specific proffers.

But Ukraine has claimed on Russia withdrawing from its home as a condition for any addresses and there's no sign that Russia is ready to do that. On Wednesday, the Moscow- backed authorities in adjoined Crimea said an attack by three waterborne drones on the Black Sea Fleet in the Bay of Sevastopol had been repelled with no damage to the line. The report couldn't be singly verified.

On Monday, explosions in another part of Crimea were said by Ukraine to have destroyed Russian dumdums being transported by rail. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that calling for a ceasefire before Russia withdrew" would effectively be supporting the ratification of Russian subjection".

In the common news conference held after addresses with Mr Xi ended, Mr Putin said" numerous vittles of the Chinese peace plan can be taken as the base for settling of the conflict in Ukraine, whenever the West and Kyiv are ready for it." But Russia had yet to see similar" readiness" from the other side, he added.

Standing alongside the Russian leader, Mr Xi said his government was in favour of peace and dialogue and that China was on the" right side of history". He again claimed that China had an" unprejudiced position" on the conflict in Ukraine, seeking to cast Beijing as the implicit peace- maker.

The brace also bandied growing trade, energy and political ties between the two nations." China is the leading foreign trade mate of Russia," President Putin said, pledging to keep up and surpass the" high position" of trade achieved last time.

Mr Xi left Russia on Wednesday, his aeroplane departing from a Moscow field. before, Mr Xi called China and Russia" great neighbouring powers and comprehensive strategic mates".

According to Russian state media, the two leaders also inked two common documents- one detailing plans for profitable co-operation and one on plans to consolidate the Russia China cooperation. They also reached an agreement on a planned channel in Siberia to deliver Russian gas to China via Mongolia. They agreed that nuclear war" must noway be unleashed" and bandied their concern at the new Aukus pact- a defence agreement between Australia, the UK and US. They also expressed concern over NATO's growing presence in Asia on" military and security issues".

There are growing enterprises in the West that China might give military support for Russia. Speaking in Brussels, NATO principal Jens Stoltenberg said his alliance hadn't" seen any evidence that China is delivering murderous munitions to Russia". But he added there were" signs" that Russia had requested munitions, and that the request was being considered in Beijing.

A common statement released by China and Russia after the meeting between the two leaders said the close cooperation between the two countries didn't constitute a" military- political alliance". Relations" do not constitute a bloc, don't have a combative nature and aren't directed against third countries", they added.

Mr Putin also used the press conference to charge the West of planting munitions with a" nuclear element" and said Russia would be" forced to reply" if the UK transferred shells made with depleted uranium to
