While the Congress-Left coalition triumphs in the Sagardighi by-election, Trinamool Congress suffers a significant loss
.
Mamata claims that the TMC won't ally with the Cong-Left in 2024 after losing Sagardighi after 13 years.
TMC leader Mamata Banerjee said that the Congress-Left
coalition had an "immoral relationship" with the BJP and declared that
her party would not form a coalition with any group to oppose the saffron camp
in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was defeated by the Congress-Left coalition in a by-election on Thursday for the Sagardighi assembly seat in West Bengal. For the TMC, which had been defeating Sagardighi since 2011, this is a significant blow. The TMC member from Sagardighi and state minister Subrata Saha passed away in December of last year, forcing the need for a by-election.
With a margin of more than 22,000 votes, the Left-backed
Congress candidate Bayron Biswas won the by-election. The beedi business is
well-known in Sagardighi, which has a majority-minority population of more than
60%. The scheduled caste and scheduled tribe populations in the rural seat are
around 18.5% and 6.5%, respectively. There are around 2.3 lakh voters there.
"The Left and the Congress have triumphed together in
this. To overthrow the TMC, the opposition must unite. Adhir Chowdhury, the
leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, claimed that Mamata Banerjee had
abandoned the minority community by continuously playing the minorities'
political cards.
Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the TMC, however, claimed
that the Congress-Left coalition had a "immoral relationship" with
the BJP and stated that her party would not form a coalition with any of the
two opposition parties in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) or the CPIM and Congress formed an unethical partnership. A fraction of the BJP's votes were
moved to Congress. How would the Congress or Left oppose the BJP if there
is an unethical coalition and they want to defeat Mamata Banerjee? The TMC
would take on this alliance by itself, she declared.
Political observers said that the minority community was a
significant factor in the TMC's defeat. "This triumph reflects the West
Bengali people's aspiration for emancipation from corruption and thugs. Md.
Salim, state secretary of the CPI(M), stated, "We urge the opposition to
get together and oppose the TMC and the BJP.
The TMC's loss of the Sagardighi assembly seat to the
Congress-Left coalition after a 13-year absence is viewed as a significant
defeat for the party before the pivotal panchayat elections. The outcome of the
by-election is also considered as having the potential to alter the political
landscape of the state, with the Congress-Left coalition emerging as a strong
third front against the TMC and the BJP.
