Report: BJP Becomes Highest-Earning National Party in FY 2021–2022 and Takes in More Than Half of Overall Revenue

According to research by the Organization for Democratic Reforms, the ruling BJP party in India has claimed the greatest income among national parties for the fiscal year 2021–2022. (ADR).

 With the BJP accounting for more than half of it, the eight recognized national parties reported a total income of 3289.34 crores from all across India. With a reported income of 545.745 crores or 16.59% of the combined income of the eight national parties, the Trinamool Congress came in second.

During FY 2020–21 to FY 2021–22, the BJP's revenue climbed by 154.82 percent, or 1164.783 crores, or from 752.337 crores to 1917.12 crores. The TMC's revenue climbed from 74.417 crores in FY 2020–21 to 545.745 crore in FY 2021–22, a 633.36 percent increase (Rs 471.328 crore). During FY 2020–21 to FY 2021–22, the Congress' revenue climbed by 89.41%, or 255.51 crores, from FY 2020–21 to FY 2021–22's 285.765 crores to FY 2021–22's 541.275 crores.

The study also noted that of the eight national parties, four, the BJP, the TMC, the Congress, and the NCP, received 1811.9425 crores, or 55.09 percent, of their total funding through donations made through electoral bonds in the fiscal year 2021–2022 (FY 2021–2022). Election-related donations totaling 1033.70 crores, 528.143 crores, 236.0995 crores, and 14 crores were made to the BJP, TMC, Congress, and NCP, respectively.

 

The Electoral Commission has until October 31, 2022, to receive the parties' yearly audited financial statements. Just the BSP and NPEP filed their audit reports on time; the reports from the NCP, AITC, CPI(M), CPI, BJP, and INC were submitted, respectively, after delays of 2, 2, 3, 21, 53, and 55 days.

 

The ADR has expressed concerns about the anonymity given to contributors and urged for more openness in political fundraising as electoral bonds are used more frequently for donations.
