India plans to modernize its military for a whopping $100 billion, and the LCA Tejas will be entirely indigenous.
Rajnath Singh, the Indian defense minister, has declared that during the next five to ten years, domestic military companies will receive orders totaling more than $100 billion.
India intends to fully indigenously produce the LCA Tejas
and will spend $100 billion modernizing its military.
Rajnath Singh, the defense minister of India, has said that India intends to invest more than $100 billion in military modernization during the following five to ten years.
The announcement was made on March 6
during the Navy Commanders' Conference held onboard INS Vikrant, India's first
indigenous aircraft carrier.
Singh underlined the link between economic success and
security, and how the military industry has grown into a big demand generator
that supports the economy and ensures the growth of the nation. He continued by
saying that the defense industry is poised to take off and will fundamentally
alter the economic landscape of the nation.
A gradual import restriction on weapons slated for
indigenization over the next five to six years has been imposed by the Modi
administration, which has been publishing "Negative Lists" of defense
equipment and supporting the indigenization of their manufacturing. The four lists,
which were made public in August 2020, May 2021, April 2022, and October 2022,
include 411 different types of weapons and platforms, as well as tens of
thousands of weapon sub-systems and parts found in fighter jets, helicopters,
submarines, tanks, infantry combat vehicles, electronic warfare systems,
missiles, smart ammunition, rockets, and bombs.
Around 2,700 items have been locally produced as of August
2022, according to the Indian Ministry of Defense, and the remaining components
are expected to be produced in India in stages between December 2022 and
December 2028.
According to sources, the third list, which includes
complicated principal weapons and equipment such as lightweight tanks, naval
utility helicopters, missiles, and artillery gun systems, will be the most
difficult for the domestic defense sector to produce.
For the past three years, the Modi administration has
steadily raised the proportion of domestic purchases in the capital acquisition
budget for the Indian military. The government earmarked 75% of the defense
capital procurement budget, or around 1,00,000 crores, for the domestic industry in
this year's budget.
Since 2020, the Indian government has set out more than
3,000 crores towards the domestic defense sector. In different categories of
capital procurement, the government has given the acceptance of Need (AoN) to 163
bids totaling $2,46,989.38 crores.
The government should give priority to things like
airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), tanks, troop carriers, subsystems,
ammunition, long-, medium-, and short-range missiles, and artillery, according
to Indian aerospace analyst Girish Linganna. The Tejas Variants, Twin Engine
Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF), Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), transport
aircraft like the Dornier and The Airbus C295 and trainers are also mentioned
as possible aircraft.
He clarifies that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a
new category with quicker deployments and shorter development timeframes.
Beyond-visual-range missiles, anti-radiation missiles, anti-tank, anti-drone
systems, guided bombs, and anti-airfield weapons are only a few examples of
possible munition types. More induction may be seen for Brahmos and Pralay with
the short- and medium-range missiles.
Rajnath Singh alluded to a "fifth positive
indigenization list" during the five-day Aero India-2023 airshow that took
place at Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru last month. The industry
anticipates more information on this in the upcoming months, but he did not
define what will be on the list.

modernization over the next five to ten years is a big step towards the country
becoming a defense giant. Government efforts to increase domestic output
